Cambodia's Westport will build a new deep-water terminal

China News Service, Phnom Penh, September 21 (Reporter Ouyang Kaiyu) Sihanoukville Port in Cambodia plans to start construction of a new deep-water terminal in the middle of next year, which will be able to accommodate more international freighters for docking and unloading.

Sihanoukville Port, which is listed on the Cambodia Stock Exchange, announced on the 21st that the new terminal will cost approximately US$210 million to build. With a total length of 350 meters and a water depth of 14.50 meters, the new terminal will become the deepest container terminal in Cambodia, 4 meters deeper than the existing container terminal.

According to reports, the new deep-water container terminal belongs to the first phase of the expansion project of Sihanoukville Port. In the future, Sihanoukville Port will also plan to start the second and third phases of the expansion project.

Sihanoukville Port is the only deep-water port in Cambodia. It is located on the south bank of the entrance of Kampong Son Bay on the southwest coast of Cambodia, and is close to the southeast side of the Gulf of Thailand. It is Cambodia’s largest foreign trade gateway. The existing container terminal in Westport is 400 meters long and 10.5 meters deep. In 2020, the container throughput handled by Sihanoukville Port was 641,000 TEUs, a slight increase from 639,000 in 2019.

Cambodian Minister of State and Public Works and Transport Sun Zhanto said that the new deep-water container terminal will be able to accommodate 90% of international freighters to and from the Asia-Pacific region, further enhancing the function and convenience of Sihanoukville Port. After the new deepwater terminal is put into operation, Cambodia will be able to directly export more goods to the European and American markets without transiting through places such as Singapore.
