The United Nations releases trade statistics: Global dependence on China for anti-epidemic supplies increases



         The latest trade statistics released by the United Nations show that as the new crown epidemic spreads globally, the demand for four kinds of anti-epidemic products such as masks, surgical gowns, protective clothing and goggles has increased sharply. Although countries have increased their local productivity, the share of "Made in China" products for epidemic prevention has increased from less than 60% in January to 80% in May.


   German News TV reported on August 25 that the total world trade of medical masks increased from approximately US$900 million in January to US$9.2 billion in May. Medical masks imported from China accounted for more than half of the trade volume of various countries. Among the masks imported by the EU, "Made in China" accounted for 93% in May, an increase of 45% from January. The proportion in the United States is 92%, an increase of 20% from January. Japan's ratio is as high as 96%, an increase of 16% from January.


   The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung stated that from March to May, China exported 70.6 billion masks. Last year, only about 20 billion masks were produced globally. In terms of protective clothing, “In May, eight to ninety percent of the protective clothing from the United States, Europe, and Japan were imported from China, and from 40 to 60% in January. In general, China accounted for 59% of the global trade in anti-epidemic supplies in January. As of May, it was 83%.
